Role of a Finance Scholar
The Department of Finance and Deregulation (Finance) Scholarship Program (the Program) offers a diverse and comprehensive introduction into the Australian Public Service (APS) offering students work experience in their discipline areas while completing their undergraduate degree.
The Program is developed to provide students with the skills and knowledge to become Finance employees and to underpin their future careers within Finance and the APS. As a Finance Scholarship recipient you will be placed in a Business Group that is relevant to your area of study for the duration of your degree. Information regarding the different Business Groups can be found in About the Department.

Remuneration Package as a Finance Scholarship Recipient
As a part of the Scholarship Program, you will receive:
- an annual allowance of $18,700, paid in fortnightly installments
- 12 weeks paid work each year ($37,400 per annum pro rata) each year in your university vacation breaks, in addition to the above allowance with the opportunity to be paid $43,000 per annum (pro rata in your third year of study)
- an annual $1,000 text book allowance
- possible payment of a lump sum retention bonus following your first year after completing the Finance Graduate Program
What Finance Requires from Scholarship Recipients
- be successful in completing all units every semester
- be available to work in your semester breaks (winter and summer vacation)
- be willing to be a campus ambassador for Finance at your university
- be willing to relocate to Canberra on completion of your undergraduate degree to join the Finance Graduate Program
Benefits of the Finance Scholarship Program include:
- direct entry into the Finance Graduate Program (a permanent position with Finance at the successful completion of your degree)
- paid work experience relevant to your discipline of study
- increased knowledge of and experience in public sector and Government
- working in a key Australian Government Agency
Working Environment
When you work in Finance, you will be part of a team that deals with a range of issues that are critical to the Australian Government. As a Finance scholarship recipient, you will be part of Finance's Scholarship Program that will provide you with the skills and knowledge needed to become a Finance officer and to underpin a future career within Finance and the broader APS.

Eligibility Requirements/Citizenship
To be eligible for a scholarship position within Finance, you must:
- be is a first year full time university student who is completing their undergraduate degree
- have successfully completed your first semester of 2009
- be an Australian citizen
- be able to obtain a security clearance to the minimum level of ‘Protected' depending on the requirements of the Business Group

What skills and qualities do I need to bring to Finance?
You need to be in your first year of university study and possess:
- an ability to work well in a team, show respect for your colleagues and nurture all your internal and external working relationships
- excellent communication skills – both oral and written
- a commitment to working towards the delivery of outcomes and your ability to be innovative
- personal drive and integrity
- a willingness to learn and an aptitude for applying new knowledge in the workplace
Where would I be working?
You would be working in one of the Canberra offices of the Department of Finance and Deregulation (Finance).
If successful you will be placed in a Business Group that is relevant to your area of study for the duration of your degree. Information regarding the different Business Groups can be found in About the Department.
When would I be working?
All Scholars will have access to complete the equivalent of 12 weeks full time paid work during each year of university study.
Canberra based Scholars will have the option of completing paid work part time throughout the year and/or full time during term/semester breaks.
Interstate Scholars will have the option to complete 12 weeks paid work during winter and summer vacation breaks.
What will I be paid?
All Scholars will be paid:
- an annual allowance of $18,700, paid in installments
- salary at the APS 1 level currently $37,400 per annum (pro rata) when completing 12 weeks paid work each year, and the opportunity to advance to an APS 2 level currently $43,000 per annum (pro rata) at the commencement of the third year of study
- an annual $1,000 text book allowance
- possible payment of a lump sum retention bonus, contingent on tenure with Finance
